Perhaps you have a Student Initiative that wants to do HSR (or perhaps just lower case "student initiative" -- not a formal SI group, but just one or more students motivated to do some HSR!).

First, you should identify whether your planned project actually is HSR. This page does not repeat information that is available elsewhere about when a project counts as HSR, but here are a couple of examples:

  • NOT HSR: "Our SI puts on plays and musicals. We want to distribute a google form to Minerva students with their preferences for theatre, to help us select our next production!"
  • HSR: "Our SI puts on plays and musicals, and we think it would be cool to see how country-of-origin influences preferences for theatre. We want to distribute a google form that will ask Minervans questions about their country-of-origin and preferences for theatre, and from that make conclusions that we might share with the world!

You are strongly encouraged to contact the IRB (hsr@minerva.edu) to help you categorize your plans, if you are at all unsure.

If you know that your project is HSR, or you are unsure and the IRB informs you that it is, then you will need to identify a faculty or staff member who is willing and able to advise your project. Reflecting an approach that is common across universities, the "Primary Investigator" (PI) on an "IRB Protocol" (i.e., approved HSR project) must be a faculty or staff member that is professionally qualified to supervise HSR. Even if students are doing most of the work, the PI must be be the faculty/staff who is agreeing to supervise and be accountable for the proper conduct of the HSR approved by the IRB. A student can not be the PI who submits the IRB Protocol.

If you're not sure what faculty or staff member might be interested in collaborating/supervising for your idea, you might contact the Minerva Psychology Lab for ideas!
